Over the Labour Day Weekend, the expected car count at Raceway Park’s drag strip was cut in half by the threat of Hurricane Earl. Well over two hundred cars had been expected, but only one hundred vehicles braved the elements.
Racing on Sunday saw the points’ leaders in each class convincingly clinch their division title.
When the weekend began Jim Green from Sussex, New Brunswick, had a 10 point lead over Hunter River’s Glenn MacLean in the Super Pro Class. After Green defeated Charlottetown’s Bruce Howatt in the final pairing, he won the division by 71 points. Howatt grabbed enough points for the day to move into second place, nine points ahead of MacLean who ended up in third place for the season.
In the Pro Bracket Class Mike Stone from Riverview, New Brunswick defeated Sheldon Pastuck from New Waterford, Nova Scotia in the division final and moved all the way from eleventh spot in the points’ race to third for the year. However, Chad Ramsay who had been the class leader coming into the weekend, finished third for the day and ended up 52 points ahead of Winsloe’s Matt Clow who finished the season in second place. Charlottetown’s Travis Livingstone finished the season in third place.
The Bike/Sled class has been about two racers all season, Winsloe’s Glenn Frizzell and Cornwall’s Steve Campbell. Although Campbell’s big Suzuki did manage to defeat Frizzell’s Arctic Cat snowmobile on this day, he ended up with 212 points for the year which was 31 behind Frizzell, this year’s class champion. Springvale’s Joey McInnis was third for the day while Mike MacDonald from Oyster Bed Bridge was third in the yearly points standing.
Richard Leger from Shediac, New Brunswick continued his dominance over the Sportsman Class winning the class for a third time this season in five attempts. His 1980 Trans Am defeated Rosa Niesten’s 1989 Ford Mustang in the final round of the day. Mike Ingram from Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia was third. Two Charlottetown racers, Joan Livingstone and Ray Smith ended up second and third respectively in the yearly points.
When the points were totaled, the Junior Dragster Division was the closest race of all the classes.
Kevin Gallant from Miscouche defeated Breanna O’Handley from Guysborough, Nova Scotia in the day’s final , but Tyne Valley’s William Newcombe managed to move ten points ahead of Wellington’s Brett Ramsay to earn the points’ division title. Lisa Carroll from Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia finished third for the year.
The 10.90 Pro Tree Class, which was run at the end of the day, saw Jason Mac Neil from Stellarton, Nova Scotia defeat Tim Bradford from Saint John, New Brunswick in the final. Bruce Howatt was third in the class.
The next and final action at the drag strip will be on Thanksgiving Weekend with the running of the Turkey Trot Nationals. Meanwhile Tuesday Night Street Drags will continue for at least two more weeks.
