First Points 2012

The first event in the Raceway Park Drag Racing points series was held over the weekend.

Although all of Saturday’s racing had to be cancelled because of the rain that started after only two hours of time trials. Even Sunday’s program could not be started until almost one o’clock. However with the cooperation of all racers, the five  classes and a Duck Race were successfully completed.

In the Super Pro class, it appeared that Cody Hobart’s Dan Page Dragster from Grand Bay-Westfield, NB was the ride to beat as he mowed through the competition in the first three rounds. In the first round, he defeated the defending ADRA Super Pro champion, Bruce Howatt. Next he was able to put his brother, Chris Hobart, on the sidelines. The always tough Ray Bourque from Memramcook, NB was his third victim. However, Bob Partridge and his 1965 Chevy II from Sackville, NB ended Hobart’s streak in the class final. Ray Bourque from Memramcook, NB finished third by edging Moncton’s Terry Short.

In the Pro Bracket division, a relative newcomer defeated a wily veteran in the class final. Mike Poirier from Wellington managed to get past Tyne Valley’s Ernest Newcombe. Poirier had earlier defeated such notables as Tony Lyons, Chad Ramsay, and Mike Stone. Lyons who hails from Riverview, NB did take home third place money by defeating Mike Batog from McKees Mills, NB.

Glenn Frizzell from Charlottetown once again captured the Bike/Sled class on his 2000 Arctic Cat ZRT-800 snowmobile as he defeated the big Suzuki Katana of New Argyle’s Steve Campbell in the class final. Kimberley Goodwin drove her Yamaha RX1 to third place by defeating Chick Coughlin’s Ski Doo MX7. Both drivers are from Wellington.

Ray “Pug” Smith earned top honours in the Sportsman class by driving his 1973 Plymouth Satellite past the 1995 Toyota Tercel of Gus Longaphie from New Argyle. Christine Leeman from Letang, NB was third in the class.

Rylie Green from Berwick, NB defeated Jocelyne Campbell from New Argyle in the Junior Dragster final. J.C. Creamer from Mount Stewart was third. In the consolation division of the Junior Dragster division, Rylie’s brother, Jensen Green, defeated runner up Dawson Toombs from Hunter River.

The Duck Race, for first round losers, was captured by Saint John’s Ray Roach as he defeated Tony Wakelin from Cavendish.

Next action at the local drag strip will be a combined  ADRA and PEI points event on June 30 and July 1. Meanwhile, Tuesday night street drags continue each week beginning at 6:30pm. Watch the track website (www.raceway park.biz) for possible rain postponements to Wednesday or Thursday nights.
